Q: Monitor data "not supported" intermittently on Macbook Pro El Capitan 10.11.5
Loss of the external monitor display, with "not support" message on monitor, followed by black screen or fuzzy display.
By running in safe mode or changing users I can partially and temporarily restore function. With 5-10 second dark screens progressing to a fully dark screen, and occasional message: "not support" (its a Vizio monitor). Also instances of fuzzy display, and intermittent - flickering display have occured.
I went through the recommended processes in the apple monitor thread: Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac - Apple Support,
- Restart in safe mode to reset the display resolution to defaults seemed to work, but problem has returned. System operates better in safe mode, and seems to reset monitor communication.
- Logging out and back in resets to an occasional flickering as does changing over and back from a guest user I have set up. However, with use, the I progressively lose the monitor and need to repeat.
- Reseting Mac's NVRAM and SMC to reset the video ports to their defaults didn't resolve the lost monitor communication.
The problem began shortly after updating Adobe flash player (22). (Before this the system worked flawlessly). I therefore tried deleting the 3 new files Adobe installed in macintosh HD / library / launch Daemons, hoping it was a software issue
When the monitor fails to work, testing monitor on our cable tv output shows monitor working well, and Running our TV off the mac also works.
Seems like a software compatibility issue?
- System: MacBook Pro, i5
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256MB
- External display E240AR 1920x1080 (VIzio)
- OSX El Capitan 10.11.5
- connection: via moshi HD cable
Obviously I am a real rookie at this - please any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
How can I track down this apparent software issue? Looking at activity log - but unable to decipher a problem.
Thanks!!!
