Q: Bootcamp partition does not work after upgrade to El Capitan - please help!

Hi!

I cannot for the life of me get my Bootcamp partition to boot!

It is discoverable using Diskutil, but since I bought a new Macbook Pro (Retina, 13 inch, Early 2015) and was forced into Yosemite, I cannot get Bootcamp to work.

I have since upgraded to El Capitan.

I have been following vaious posts (Boot Camp disappeared after El Capitan update) and have followed instructions to resize the partition to what Testdisk was showing (MS Data                854654976  977104888  122449913):

sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

Password:

Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their

partition table automatically reloaded!

Partition table scan:

  APM: not present

  GPT: present

Found valid GPT with hybrid MBR; using GPT.

OK; writing new GUID partition table (GPT) to /dev/rdisk0.

Warning: The kernel may continue to use old or deleted partitions.

You should reboot or remove the drive.

The operation has completed successfully.

And then followed instructions to make Bootable, however I am still having no joy.

Now (after above) Testdisk:

SIP is still disabled. Bootcamp is UNMOUNTED using diskutil.

Please let me know what I am missing here! Hopefully something simple...

Please also let me know if I have posted anything here that puts my information as a security risk.

Thanks

Can you post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Do you have any third-party NTFS software? Have you tried power-cycling the Mac and holding the Alt/Option key to choose the Windows partition?

    Does this help?

No Thirdparty NTFS software that I am aware of.. Not sure what you mean by power-cycling, but booting and holding the Alt/Option key only shows me my Mac HD..

    Thanks

Did you hide the partition type GUIDs? If yes, they do not carry any personal information and are generic UUIDs for partition types. If you are unable to see Windows, do you see EFI Boot? Also, please run the following two procedures and test.

From the fdisk, the Darwin boot starts at 853384832 and ends at 854654368, whereas the Windows partition starts at 854654976 .. 608 blocks later.. is that a concern??

You can see the same 608 sector gap in your GPT output. This is to block along on sector boundaries. It is normal.

You have a 2015 MBP, which does not support MBR/Hybrid MBR. Was there a specific reason to rebuild the MBR? What is the version of Windows on your MBP?

    Windows 7

Only rebuilt in an attempt to make it bootable again, but sadly having no joy.

I partitioned using disk util and formatted the partition for Windows, then I cloned my Windows partition from my OS X Lion (greatest OS made) Bootcamp partition.

Of course this does not work! As Yosemite/El Capitan made some fundamental changes to bios...

I am now in need to the Windows partition, and am struggling to bring it back to life.

    Thanks again, Loner

W7 is not supported on 2015 Macs. You will run into a lot of issues with drivers, etc..

How did you clone the partition? The 2015 Macs have a different disk block size.

It is your 2015 Mac which no longer supports legacy MBR/BIOS OSes.

Can you install W8.1/W10 and migrate your W7?

I only have the license for W7, hence didn't want to pay for another Windows license.. Is there no way?

"Can you install W8.1/W10 and migrate your W7?"

I only have the license for W7, hence didn't want to pay for another Windows license.. Is there no way?

You can try to install W10 and have 30 days for activation. Try using your W7 key and check if you can activate W10. There is a Free Upgrade till July 29th, 2016. Please see http://www.itpro.co.uk/operating-systems/23119/windows-10-release-date-and-specs -76 . You may be able to call Microsoft and let them activate W10 over the phone.

    OK thank you.

Do you think resizing my partition is something I should reverse?

My recommendation is to find an older MBP (2014 will work very nicely) and restore your Winclone backup to it. Something like http://www.apple.com/shop/product/G0RD1LL/A/Refurbished-154-inch-MacBook-Pro-28G Hz-Quad-core-Intel-i7-with-Retina-Displa… should work.

If you have the ability to return the 2015, I will suggest returning it. W7 is officially supported on 2014 models as noted in Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support .
