Q: Does Time Machine erases previous OS ?

I upgraded my OS tô El Captain and before that I did a backup using Time Machine and now I would like tô backup again tô keep safe records of some jobs. Doing that will Time Machine erase the previous OS (Yosemite) in the new backup ?

Thanks in advance.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), Processor 2.7GHz Intel i5 16 GB

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

Restores an Entire Disk Although the procedure is somewhat time-consuming, Time Machine can also return your entire disk (including OS X itself) to its state at some point in the past.

No. Time Machine keeps backups of your system until the storage device which you use with Time Machine runs out of space, in which case Time Machine deletes the oldest backups. The backup of your Mac with Yosemite on it will remain available to you until room has to be made for new backups.

Let me see if I understood correctly ... .

As far as I Know, after the first backup with TM (Time Machine), if it is turned on, it will incrementing the backup in a HD with files that were not in the first backup + everything of the first backup and in that way, making the "backup file" bigger and bigger, right ?

What you are saying is that when it reaches the total capacity of the HD, it will start erasing the old backups tô fit the new ones, right ? And that erasing could take (delete) sometime the ones that has the old OS X (in my case the Yosemite), right ?

    Greetings.

Yes. If, when your storage device fills up, the oldest backup on it is a backup of your computer while Yosemite was installed on it, that backup will be deleted. It doesn't matter what is on the oldest backup, it will still be deleted to make room for new backups.
