You installed an adware trojan. Take the steps below to disable it. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but they have no effect once the malware is inactivated, and trying to remove them all would be more trouble than it's worth.

Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.

Back up all data before continuing.

    1. Please triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder named "LaunchAgents" will open.

    2. Inside the folder you just opened, there may be files with any of the following names:

              com.onlineapplicationnotice.AppNotice

              com.onlineapplicationrequest.AppRequest.plist

              com.applicationstats.AppStats

Move all such items to the Trash.

Log out or restart the computer. The trojan will now be inactive, as long as you never reinstall it.

    3. From the Safari menu bar, select

                 Safari Preferences... Extensions

Uninstall all extensions you don't know you need. If in doubt, remove all of them. None is required for normal operation. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.

Thank you! I was having the same issue every few minutes for two days and it was driving me crazy! I even went to the Genius Bar at Apple store and they couldn't figure out how to fix it. They suggested I wipe my computer and reinstall everything to fix the problem. So glad I found this first! Saved me so much time and frustration!!!

Thanks for your report. Apple's customer-facing employees are not trained or equipped to deal with malware infections. That puts users with such a problem in a tough position. They would have to be lucky to find a solution anywhere, and when searching for one, they're vulnerable to yet more scams, including the blandishments of the "anti-virus" industry. So it's vitally important to avoid becoming infected by always following safe computing practices.
