Q: My MAC friends are telling me NOT to use an icloud email address.

My MAC friends are telling me NOT to use an icloud email address.

They are advising me this because they claim an icloud email address can not be deleted.   I am not talking about deleting an Apple account, or an iCloud account. I'm simply talking about the ability to delete an icloud email address.

They are telling me to use Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL because these companies allow you to delete / eliminate an email address.   This just doesn't sound right to me. I'm trying to get better advice.

Thanks

There isn't a password for your iCloud email address alone, you need to log in using your ID and password in order to use an iCloud email address

Yes, that is what I said. And as far as the password, as I said earlier, I'm not sure, but you have to complete the creation process. If you go into Settings>iCloud and then click on the Mail button to turn it on, it prompts you to create the icloud.com email. You can also check out this support document for some additional instructions. iCloud: Mail overview

Okay, I just went to iCloud.com and successfully logged in. I have never been to that website before.   I clicked on "email", and was advised I have NO iCloud email address. So I guess I can go to my Apple Mail program and create one?

Use the link I provided above this for an explanation for creating your iCloud mail address. Do not use the Apple Mail program.

Do not use the Apple Mail program.

To be more specific, I think you meant to say,  "Do not use the Apple Mail program to set up iCloud email."

To use iCloud Mail on iCloud.com, go to icloud.com/mail and sign in using your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud) or your @icloud.com email address (not an alias).

Once I have set up iCloud email using the above, I can certainly use the Apple mail program if I want to ?  I rather like it.

I'm a little confused as to why you are looking specifically for an iCloud email address at all.

When you signed up to start syncing Contacts via iCloud, you set up an iCloud account using your machine@verizon.net. That action created a machine@icloud.com address for you automatically, which is the "iCloud" version of your Apple ID. They can be used pretty much interchangeably - you can sign in with either version for any service or to access iCloud.com.

So, the "linked" iCloud.com account stays attached to your Apple account forever. But, that does not prevent you from changing the Apple ID to that Apple account to rockstar@gmail.net if you want to. Your "linked" iCloud account would be rockstar@iCloud.com.

I guess I'm not getting why your friends are having a discussion about the iCloud.com address.

Yes, you can set up an independent, standalone iCloud.com email address (which then becomes both your Apple ID and your iCloud ID), but unless you do not have a way to get any other type of email address, not really advisable. Since, as you said, in 10 years, you might want to make that something different, and if it is an @me, @mac, or @iCloud.com email that is being used for the Apple ID itself, then you won't be able to change it. You are either stuck with it, or you re-purchase everything you have ever used that ID to purchase items from the iTunes & App Stores, you lose all of your Photo Library and Music Library stuff, just so you can create a brand new Apple Account with a brand new Apple ID.

Much easier to stay with a generic email as your Apple account Primary ID so you can EDIT it whenever and however often you decide to change your Primary email address. Same Apple account - updated Apple and iCloud ID.

    Cheers,

I should have read your message prior to creating my first iCloud email address a few minutes ago.

    >>  When you signed up to start syncing Contacts via iCloud, you set up an iCloud account using your machine@verizon.net. That action created a machine@icloud.com address for you automatically  <<

I don't believe I EVER had a machine@icloud.com until now.   I went into system preferences > iCloud > email.  When I clicked on email I was advised that I did not have ANY iCloud email address.  I then proceeded to set one up for the first time.

Sure enough, Apple has changed my Apple ID from machine@verizon.net, to machine@icloud.com WITHOUT my permission.   When I set this up I thought I was ONLY creating an email account, not changing everything else as well.

I tried to log into my iTunes account and they had change this to machine@icloud.com I just hate the fact that this can never, ever be changed.

Tragically, I spent nearly a week trying to anticipate every, "bad thing" that might happen if I created an iCloud email account. I have failed miserably.

Yes, that is true. I didn't feel it was necessary to repeat that. You were the one saying you were going to use the Apple Mail program to create the iCloud Mail address, which is what was incorrect, you need to use the information in the link I provided for creating your iCloud email address.

OK, let's start from the beginning:

    I don't believe I EVER had a machine@icloud.com until now.

Actually, you may not have been aware of it, but as soon as you set up iCloud in order to sync your Contacts, you had a machine@icloud.com address. It is one and the same with your Apple ID actually.

Now, if you never followed these prompts using your "regular" Apple ID when getting your Contacts set up, then you probably did not set up iCloud at that time. This is how that would have worked:

    1.     You would have clicked on Settings>iCloud

    2.     You would have typed in your "regular" Apple ID

    3.     That would have set up your iCloud account that allowed you to sync Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Photo Stream, etc. with any other devices or computers that were signed into iCloud with that same Apple ID.

    4.     That also would have generated an iCloud version of your Apple ID that ended in iCloud.com instead of, say gmail.com

Mail is a different animal altogether. You can set up a new iCloud mail account and create a new iCloud ID for that email account if you wish. I have set up two or three just for testing purposes. They are mail accounts only for me, and the ID for them end in iCloud.com. But they are not my primary Apple ID.

So, I need to understand what you mean when you indicate that:

I went into system preferences > iCloud > email.  When I clicked on email I was advised that I did not have ANY iCloud email address.  I then proceeded to set one up for the first time.

Sure enough, Apple has changed my Apple ID from machine@verizon.net, to machine@icloud.com WITHOUT my permission.   When I set this up I thought I was ONLY creating an email account, not changing everything else as well.

So, you set up a new iCloud email address. But what makes you think that your machine@verizon.net or its accompanying machine@icloud.com address are changed? They are not related in any way to the iCloud account you just set up for Mail.

The easiest way to see this is to go to your computer and go to iCloud.com:

    1.     Sign in with your machine@verison.net ID and password to see what happens and report back

    2.     Sign in with your machine@icloud.com ID and password to see what happens and report back

    3.     Sign in with your new iCloud.com email address and password to see what happens and report back

You should see the same iCloud account and contents for the first two sign-ons, as that would be the iCloud account associated with your @verizon.com Apple ID

You should see a totally different iCloud account for your new iCloud.com email address, because that, is in fact, a totally separate Apple ID.

You can try the same thing by signing those various sign ins into iTunes on your computer, then look at your Purchases under Music or Apps. You should see entirely different purchases (probably none for the new iCloud.com Mail address you just set up).

    Post back with questions.

    Cheers,

Thank you for that very detailed answer. Whatever you are, you are NOT lazy!

    >>  Sign in with your machine@verison.net ID and password to see what happens and report back  <<

I logged in successfully. This account, until today I NEVER used at  iCloud.com appears to be mine.  Remember, so far I am only using iCloud with Contacts and with iTunes purchases.

The account here remains  machine@Verizon.net  This is what it has been for years.  I'm surprised I was able to login using this.  For the account name it shows, my "good, old" machine@Verizon.net

    >>  Sign in with your machine@icloud.com ID and password to see what happens and report back  <<

Okay, I'm getting really confused. I logged in successfully!  Very surprised I am able to log into my iCloud account with two different logins, (the passwords are the same).   Interestingly, when I login with machine@iCloud.com iCloud shows my account name to STILL be "good, old" machine@Verizon.net !!

Let me explain how I got more confused.   After creating the machine@iCloud.com email address, I could no longer use "good, old" machine@Verizon.net with iTunes.   In iTunes, I had to change my user name to machine@iCloud.com before I could make any purchases.

In iTunes, machine@Verizon.net no longer worked for some reason.    Moreover, my iPhone Contacts are no longer synchronizing with my Mac.   I attempted to change the user name in my iPhone iCloud but I could not figure out how to do this. There appeared to be no way to change the name on my iPhone iCloud account. So, I haven't dug my hole any deeper there yet.

    >>  You should see a totally different iCloud account for your new iCloud.com email address, because that, is in fact, a totally separate Apple ID.  <<

They appear to be the same. Both logins show the same username, "good, old" machine@Verizon.net.

Regarding iTunes, please try and stick with me on my explanation.  I have done further testing.   When I created machine@iCloud.com Apple forced me to change my Apple ID password.  I now believe that when I attempted to log into iTunes and failed with machine@Verizon.net I had forgotten about the changed password. So, when I tried using machine machine@iCloud.com with the new password I logged in successfully.

Just now, I logged out of iTunes and back in with machine@Verizon.net !!   So maybe things aren't as bad as I originally thought.   I do wonder why my contacts on my iPhone are not synchronizing with my Mac?

Before I forget, thank you for being so kind and patient with me.

OK, That is because those two IDs are really one in the same. You can use your machine@Verizon, or your machine@iCloud to sign into any Apple service that you would usually sign what you have always thought as your Apple ID. I always like to refer to the valid sign on emails for a particular Apple ACCOUNT as the Apple/iCloud/iTunes ID, since they all can be different versions of the same account. So, you will undoubtedly want to continue to use your machine@verizon.net, unless you change providers and want a new primary Apple ID email OKaddress. If that happens, go to: Apple - My Apple ID sign in with the old address you want to change, and then put in the new email address you want to use for your primary Apple ID. Your iCloud account will change to be in line with what you want it to be.

Before you ever make a change to your Primary Apple ID, however, save yorself a lot of grief by signing that Apple ID out of every Apple service it is signed in to - ESPECIALLY iCloud, but also iTunes, App Store, FaceTime, Messages, delete the Mail account if desired, etc.

Let me explain how I got more confused.  After creating the machine@iCloud.com email address, I could no longer use "good, old" machine@Verizon.net with iTunes.  In iTunes, I had to change my user name to machine@iCloud.com before I could make any purchases.

OK, so I'm a bit confused about how this new ID even came into play with iTunes. When you created your brand new iCloud ID, you made it something unique, correct? Like newmachine@iCloud.com? Because if you didn't then you did not actually create a new iCloud email address, since it was already in use.

But just making an iCloud address via the Mail App is not connected to iTunes in any way, so not sure what happened there? Can you elaborate?

You need to think of the new iCloud Mail email address as a totally separate entity from your existing, and it sounds like perfectly happy Apple/iCloud ID. You can have two iCloud Mail accounts, and the second one is just that - a mail account only. I have a couple of test ones that I use from time to time, and this is what they look like in Mail:

I never use the second email account except for playing around. It is signed in to o other place than Mail.

In iTunes, machine@Verizon.net no longer worked for some reason.   What do you mean when you indicate that it will no longer work?

Moreover, my iPhone Contacts are no longer synchronizing with my Mac. If you are signed into the same old Apple ID in iCloud on your Mac, Phone, iPad, etc. and you are looking at that old Apple ID when you go to iCloud.com, everything should be in total sync.

I attempted to change the user name in my iPhone iCloud but I could not figure out how to do this. There appeared to be no way to change the name on my iPhone iCloud account. So, I haven't dug my hole any deeper there yet. Not sure what "user" name on your iPhone iCloud you are referring to? Can you elaborate?

    >>  You should see a totally different iCloud account for your new iCloud.com email address, because that, is in fact, a totally separate Apple ID.  <<

LET'S TACKLE THE ITEMS ABOVE FIRST, THEN AFTER WE GET THOSE UNDER OUR BELT, WE CAN MOVE ONTO THE NEXT SECTION - DEAL?
