Q: Freestyle Libre and NFC

I want to connect a freestyle libre to an iphone. Freestyle Libre is an bloodsugarlevel meter which connect to a phone through NFC.

SAmsung made it possible for their phones. What about Apple?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.2

Currently the NFC chip in the iPhone is restricted to Apple Pay only.

You think that you can change quickly and autorise the NFC for Freestyle Libre?

I'm diabetic, I like Apple but if you don't allow, I think that I will must change my Apple (Ipod, Iphone, Mac, Watch,...) for Samsung... .

That would be very dificult for me to change for samsung and lots of costs but easy management of my diabetes is more important.

I hope that you can change very quickly.

This is a user-to-user technical support forum. You are not addressing Apple here. Submit any feedback you have to Apple here:

How did you track your glucose levels before smartphones? Presumably, if cost is an issue, you could still continue to do that.

Nobody responding here works for Apple so whether we can change or not doesn't count. Have you contacted Freestyle to see if they can make a Bluetooth version of their meter? Or are there other manufacturers who do so? I doubt Apple is going to open the security enclave/NFC to anything other than Apple Pay anytime in the near future. And I don't care if you switch to Samsung, if that works better for you go for it.

The Freestyle libre is a new style of glucose meter.

It's a new solution for diabetic. This solution in Europe is take in insurance charge. It's a super solution for diabetic, that's petty that apple don't open the NFC solution for the utilisation without payement. I hope that Apple change, there is lots of diabetic in USA and in the World. The Diabetic land is the 3rd biggest land in the World.

No, it's not petty, it's good security. It's silly of the manufacturer of the meter not use a more standard protocol such as Bluetooth.

    What is "the Diabetic land"?

Abbott the manufacturer of this new product ans Apple refuse the NFC, I hope that Apple adopt a new position about NFC for use without payment.

As has been noted, this seems unlikely. However, you should submit feedback. You should also tell the manufacturer of the meter that they are going to lose out on lots of customer if they don't include a protocol that iPhones support.

Making demands here achieves nothing at all. This is simply a forum of users of Apple products. Your ultimatums fall entirely on deaf ears when you make posts like that here.  Quite honestly, nobody here cares what make or model of hardware you use to meet your needs, wishes and desires.

Samsung had nothing to do with it, during development of the device BT 4.0 and the Low Power protocol was not available so Abbott released their first model as an NFC device only. They do not have a US approved device but they are currently working on their second generation version and it will reportedly include Bluetooth so your problem will be solved if you upgrade.

Did you right to Abbott Laboratories site and demand that they have a BT model?

If you do decide to go through with your threat use the same water cautions with the Galaxy S7 as you would your iPhone, their water resistant claims were significantly overstated. Despite temptations to do so do not root your phone. It has little security as it is, if you root it then it will have almost no security. But also be careful purchasing in the Google Play Store. If you decide to add a wearable resist the temptation to save money and buy the first generation Samsung watch and go for the 2. If you are also going to go with Windows computers be sure to budget for anti spyware/antivirus software (you need at least 3) and enjoy Windows 10.

It was mentioned in a couple of reviews that I read regarding the Freestyle Libre. If Abbott expects to be able to make a dent in the US market they would need to have a device that is BT compatible.

Here is a hint for you: I don't care at all what type of smartphone you use. Go buy any smartphone you want that supports full NFC communication and heed the issues I gave in a previous post. In other words buy the right tool that you need for your purposes. I'll smile with you.
