How do I make mailboxes for my iCloud email aliases in Mac Mail

How do I make mailboxes for my iCloud email aliases in Mac Mail?

I just set up my iCloud email address for the first time. I have had an Apple account for many years, but did not have an iCloud email address until now. Upon doing this, Mac Mail automatically created an Inbox, and a Outbox called, "iCloud" in Mac Mail.

Following instructions I found online from Apple, I created one alias. I would like to create mailboxes for the alias. How do I do this ?

Because it cannot be changed or deleted, I am not going to use my, "main" iCloud email address for anything. Everything will be done through one or two aliases.

Thank you for helping.

User uploaded fileSign into http://www.icloud.com and go to the Mail page. In the sidebar, click the '+' sign next to 'Folders' as in image (right). Give your new folder a name.

Now click the cogwheel icon at bottom left of the page and choose 'Rules'. When the Prefs pane opens at 'Rules' click 'Add a Rule'.

User uploaded file

Set the top drop-down menu to 'is addressed to'. Enter your alias address in the 'Name or email address' field'. Click the 'Choose a folder' menu and select your new folder. Click 'Done'.

Now go to the 'Composing' tab of the Preferences pane. In the 'Send from' section enter your alias address in the 'Set a default address' field. This will apply when sending from the Mail web page.

In Apple Mail you should see the alias address in the 'From' drop-down menu in the header.

Folder=Mailbox. The method I outlined will result in all emails to the alias address being placed in that folder where you can easily see it. However if you are never going to give anyone your primary @icloud.com address there's no real need to create an extra folder - the messages will turn up in the inbox and if you have only one alias there's no reason to separate them. You can still use the method I described to use it as the 'From' address. Or if you have more than one alias you can use the folders as I describe. You can delete an alias (doing so is apparently permanent) or you can deactivate it so that it still exists but does not work. You can have up to three aliases. Note that once you've created an alias you cannot move it to another iCloud account nor turn it into an Apple ID.

When you create a folder (mailbox) using the iCloud website it will automatically show in the Mac Mail application.

In the url bar please type www.icloud.com & enter your icloud id & password .

Then open mail application select iCloud User uploaded file and right click on it , an option appear choose new mail box , so click on it .

1. A window opens - new mail box enter name for new local mail box to be created at the top level of the On my mac section

location - on my mac

name - ......... ( you can fill up as per your choice ) , click on ok .

You will see a new mail box is created under iCloud .

And also , can create multiple mail boxes in the same way .

You can create a folder for iCloud in the same way as you create folders for any other of your mail accounts.

I have never made a, "Folder" in Mac Mail. 😟 Is a folder something that would go inside the inbox, and inside the sent box? Would a, Smart mailbox help me?

Mail (Yosemite): Use Smart Mailboxes to organize messages

However I suspect you are hoping to create an inbox specifically for your alias address

You got it! That sure would be nice, and easy, and user-friendly, if possible.

What you can do is create a folder for mail addressed to your alias and create a rule to move the relevant mail from the inbox to this folder.

Easy for a level 10, hard for a level 1. I did look, are there any directions you can point me to. There must be others that want to do the same thing as me.

I know that my primary iCloud email address is now deeply etched in granite, but is it possible for me to just create more iCloud email address? that way I can have the separate mailboxes that I want.

You can create a folder for iCloud in the same way as you create folders for any other of your mail accounts. However I suspect you are hoping to create an inbox specifically for your alias address, which you can't do as such. Aliases are aliases of your main address they aren't different addresses, as such mail for your iCloud address and it's aliases will all come into the same inbox.

What you can do is create a folder for mail addressed to your alias and create a rule to move the relevant mail from the inbox to this folder.

Just to be clear on nomenclature here, when I refer to folders, they are in fact mailboxes, since they behave pretty much like folders i tend to call them folders and indeed they look like folders in the mail app.

No it won't go inside any of the default mailboxes such as inbox, sent etc, you tend to use user created mailboxes for organisation of archives after your mail has been received/sent.

Yes a smart mailbox may achieve what you want, it would be able to show you all mail to or from a particular alias, it wouldn't however be able to move it from the inbox like a rule would though, assuming you actually wanted to move it from the inbox.

For example

Create a folder (mailbox) using the mailbox > new mailbox option, call it (say) 'Alias 1 IN'. Then create a rule (preferences > rules) with condition 'To' is alias1 @ iCloud.com and action 'move message to Alias 1 IN'

I know that my primary iCloud email address is now deeply etched in granite, but is it possible for me to just create more iCloud email address? that way I can have the separate mailboxes that I want.

No, you can only have one iCloud address, but you can create up to 3 aliases.

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your detailed answer. I did create an iCloud email address using System Preferences on my Mac Pro. It's a shame that Apple doesn't let us create more iCloud email addresses that are deletable.

Without changing my Apple ID, (machine@verizon.net) is there a way to have a mailbox for my new machine@iCloud.com email address in Mac Mail?

My ONLY reason for creating aliases is that I only want to use email addresses that can be deleted if needed. As I understand it, Apple is the one and only email provider that does not permit an email address / account to be deleted. With aliases, I can change them, or delete them at any time.

Winston mentioned that, "when I refer to folders, they are in fact mailboxes". So does that mean I can name my inbox and sent "folders", machine1@iCloud.com, and machine2@iCloud.com ?

Moreover, it is my intention to utilize my primary iCloud email address for nothing related to email, (because it cannot be deleted). It would simply be a, "gateway" to create aliases.
