Q: Problem loading MBAM

Hello, OS X 10.11.5. I tried to install some well-known anti-malware software and received the invalid argument pop-up. Please find attached EtreCheck, which I obviously can download, install and run. I also get the pop-up when I try to install Firefox and Adobe Flash.

EtreCheck version: 2.9.12 (265)

    Hello Trayon5,

I would start by uninstalling the "SafeNet" software. It has partially failed anyway. You also have "clean up" software installed. Your Mac doesn't need any "cleaning". While it isn't related to this problem, you should also re-enable your Apple Gatekeeper security. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and change "Allow apps downloaded from" to "Mac App Store and identified developers". I don't know why everyone seems to have that turned off these days. Mac and malware sittin' in a tree, k i s s i n g ....

Hooray, I think I might finally be getting somewhere. I searched for SafeNet, but couldn't find it installed. I did find something called CleanAppLogging Service. I must admit I'm new to OS X virus so I have no idea how to wipe it out. It won't be "dragged" to the trash nor is there an uninstall option.

PS, I enabled Mac App Store and identified developers. I don't know how or when I changed it.

    Hello Trayon5,

You can uninstall SafeNet with these instructions: https://sentineldiscussion.safenet-inc.com/topic/driver-installation-and-uninsta llation-on-linux-and-mac

I'm sorry, but that is as good as it gets.

For the CleanApp Logging Service, first delete "CleanApp" from your Applications folder. Then, launch System Preferences and find the "Clean App Logging" service. Control click or right click on the icon and choose "Remove CleanApp Logging preference pane".

Then restart and try MBAM again.

Ok, you said I'm sorry, but that is as good as it gets. Does that mean I should deal with just the SafeNet people? I'm just trying to get the right forum and not waste our time.

    Hello again Trayon5,

No. I just meant I didn't think their uninstallation instructions were very good. They should work, as long as you do it perfectly. Make sure to have a backup before you start. Uninstallation software on the Mac is a long-standing pet peeve of mine.

Misc comment about your RAM installation

4 GB RAM Upgradeable - [Instructions]

            BANK 0/DIMM0

                Empty

            BANK 1/DIMM0

                2 GB DDR3 1333 MHz ok

            BANK 0/DIMM1

                2 GB DDR3 1333 MHz ok

            BANK 1/DIMM1

                Empty

Paired DIMMs should be either both in DIMM0 slots or both in DIMM1 slots.  On an iMac this is side by side, not one on top of the other.

When you have matching RAM filling DIMM0 (or filling DIMM1) you get memory interleaving which allows the CPU to access RAM faster.

A the RAM is currently configured, the CPU is spending more time waiting for RAM to deliver data.

That explains some things. There is room for an upgrade. In the meantime, it sounds as if simply putting them side by side in DIMM0 will help a bit. This was actually a manufacturer issue because I've never opened this computer.

I do not expect you will see radical improvements, as disk access is still orders of magnate slower than even non-interleaved RAM.

And of course feel free to think about a RAM upgrade (Crucial.com and MacSales.com are well respected Mac RAM vendors).

However, none of these RAM comments have anything to do with your original question, so I'm off on a tangent, and you should feel free to ignore my suggestions about spending your money

    Hello again Trayon5,

You will have to use the Terminal. Launch Terminal and run the following commands:

    cd /System/Library/Extensions

    sudo kextunload -v Sentinel.kext

    sudo rm -f Sentinel.kext

And now that I look at those instructions, I see that they are wrong. Perhaps I shall add SafeNet to EtreCheck's list of adware so it can be properly uninstalled. For now, you will have to run these additional Terminal commands:

    sudo unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.safenet.server.plist

    sudo rm /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.safenet.server.plist

Please use copy and paste to enter these commands. Don't try to type them in.

Did I mention the part about a backup yet?

Great, thanks for those scripts. It looks like they did the trick, but I still can't install. It must be something else. I wish I knew how to decipher this report better.

    Hello again Trayon5,

You still have a "clean up" app installed. I forgot to tell you to delete the "Clean App" app from your Applications folder. Hopefully that will remove the daemon, but I doubt it. You may have to manually remove "com.syniumsoftware.CleanAppDaemon.plist" from /Library/LaunchDaemons.
