Q: Macbook (12") won't charge through adapter

I have just purchased a new 2016 Macbook 12" and am having an issue charging it through the VGA adapter.

I purchased a USB charger (30w) and usb - usb-c cables. It charges fine when connected direct to the macbook but not through the adapter. I am unsure if this is because I am using the USB-USB-c cable and will try the stock charger tonight when I get home.

Are there any limitations with USB- USB-c cables that I may have missed?

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

The USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and the Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter allows you to charge.

If you have an issue with the adapter check the specs and ideas in the following link to be sure it's OK...

• Using the USB-C port and adapters on your MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later - Apple Support

If the adapter is defective check a new one to see. Be sure the port is clean of debris, just in case.

Thanks I'll try the original apple charger when I get home this evening so I could confirm it is an issue with the adapter then

I guess the question is are there any limitations that would stop me charging using a USB-A to USB-C cable through the adapter?

Ok it works fine with the supplied apple usb-c charger.

So it would seem that you cannot charge through the adapter with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Didn't you get a charger and cables with the new MacBook. They are part of the contents of the box.

In the Box MacBook
29W USB-C Power Adapter
USB-C Charge Cable (2m)

You should only use the supplied items or Apple products purchased from Apple. Anything else may, and I stress may, be unsuitable.

I'm having the same issue. Use the original power cable and USB-C cable, but it is not charging at all. I make sure my power source is good. All the connections are secured. Still no charging. Very frustrating.
