Lost connection to external USB-C display after sleep

I am connecting my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) directly via a USB-C cable to a Lenovo X1 external display. The MacBook recognises the display when I plug in the cable. I then close the MacBook and work exclusively in the external display. However, after the MacBook wakes up from sleeping, it does not reconnect to the display. That means that every time the computer goes to sleep I have to unplug and freshly plug the USB-C cable in order to connect to the display. Does anybody know what to do that the display stays connected?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), null

Hello forestforger,
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know just how you feel. I have a couple different external monitors I use with my MacBook - I depend on everything working properly!

One way to solve this is by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your MacBook. The SMC helps regulate the functions of some of the other hardware on your Mac. This article will walk you through how to reset it: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
Let us know if that works, or if you run into any other trouble, the whole community is here to help.
Best regards
