Can not adjust Brightness in Windows 10

My Macbook Pro is the model of later 2015 with AMD R9 M370X.

I installed windows 10 through bootcamp.

By now, all the drivers of bootcamp is up to date.

everything works well in EI Capitan, while in Win10, I can not adjust screen brightness, but the keyboard backlight adjustion works. It's too bright for me to work for a long time.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

I'm back. Should have stayed away. 109 yesterday, only 107 today. YUCK! I'm moving to Antarctica!

It will be -109 there. 😉

I booted in OS X. The screen was dim. I used the brightness buttons and they worked fine. I then re-booted in Windows and the screen was the same brightness, just fine. But the buttons do not work in Windows. So the problem hasn't changed (and appears to have nothing to do with changing the system message volume.

The change made on the macOS side was conveyed via hardware/settings to the Windows side. A good sign that some of the layers work correctly.

I'll have to research the registry. I have no idea where to look for screen defaults.

Look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-0 8002be10318}\0000 and KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2 . See Fix: Windows 10 Screen Brightness Control Not Working for reference.

Looking at the output, I realize I asked you about this earlier. Since you have two different GPUs, the issue is unrelated to a specific driver, but is related to EFI Updates as part of Sierra 10.12.6.

On the Intel Mac, if you disable SIP and re-install the BC drivers for that specific model, does the slider show up? If you have done this earlier, then there is no need to repeat it.

I was able to put the drivers on a flash drive. Had to boot in recovery mode for csrutil enable (disable) to work. Did that, then re-installed from Windows. That was weird. It hung at about 5% for a long time, then popped up an empty pop-up with a red X in it. Clicking OK on that and I got the message that Boot Camp was installed properly. ???

All that and the brightness keys still don't work and the Windows System Display page doesn't give me a way to adjust brightness, except the check box for automatic brightness (which is not checked).

???

It's a 3 day effort to get Windows and all my tools re-installed. Then however many days (now 5) trying to deal with issues like this. Since this is happening with 2 different systems running Sierra and both systems worked on El Capitan, I have no confidence that re-installing would be any different. I am really not willing to do that with such a high risk, low percentage outcome that it would have positive results.

Just wanted to close this out. Thanks Loner T for all your suggestions.

Here's the bottom line. I spent a couple of hours on the phone with apple. For the 3rd time, they had me download the latest Boot Camp drivers and install. But this last time, OSX hung for many, many minutes while installing the drivers. This was like 15 minutes. I killed the process and re-installed, taking only seconds. But the next time I went to reboot, no Macitosh disk existed!!! One more boot and it re-appeared, but it won't boot. It runs about 90% of the progress bar, then the computer shuts down.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened. The first time was due to OSX crashing after downloading the El Capitan to Sierra upgrade. Apple has a serious problem here. I hope they spend some time working on it.

In the end, I will need to rebuild OSX and Windows under Boot Camp for the 3rd time, then re-install all my tools. Each time takes about 3 days and then a couple of days to figure out all the configurations and nuances I need to fix. This time I'm thinking of making my OSX partition a lot smaller and my Windows partition a lot bigger, then giving up on using OSX for most of my computer usage.

And finally, I have no reason to believe erasing the hard drive and starting over will fix the brightness key problem. I still believe this is a bug in the drivers, at least for my 15 Pro and my 13 Pro.

Ciao!

Just to finish this off...

As I said a month ago, I needed to rebuild my Mac. Since it was software and still under warranty, I let Apple do it. They installed High Sierra rather than Sierra. I then rebuilt BootCamp and Windows 10. Very unexpectedly, the brightness keys now work. I never expected that.

I also installed Winclone on the Mac side so if the Apple software crashes the Mac boot sector (for the 3rd time), I should be able to recover my Windows partition easily.

Curiously, while going through this process and talking to a "Genius," he told me that the BootCamp drivers are not written by Apple, but by Microsoft and purchased from them by Apple. He also said that BootCamp wasn't a supported application, and I should just go buy a $500 computer if I wanted to run Windows. Sounds awfully arrogant to me.

They are indeed custom drivers for Apple-specific hardware. They are certified by Apple. There are cases where Intel, Broadcom, AMD and nVidia write custom drivers for Apple.

The 'Genius' is misinformed. Carrying two laptops is not what a user wants, hence they choose a Mac, which allows the best of both worlds. I still think a Mac runs the Windows reasonably well.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I have the Edition Crimson installed.

I found the button to adjust the brightness, in the "Additional Setting" in AMD RADEON SETTINGS.

Thank you for your advice, that's why I retried this software.

But still can not adjust through the keyboard, anyway, it does not matter.

Good day to you.
