Q: Installer worked, installation did not

Making the bootable El Capitan installer according to Apple's article worked well. Booting from the installer worked well. Installation seemd to work well but got stuck saying "less than 1 minute" for a very very long time. I tried with several usb sticks and got the same result every time.

Any hints on hiw to fix this? Are there any limitations like installing on external ssd?

First of all: please make sure the installation is stuck. You can check this by pressing Cmd + L to bring up the Log. Double-check that files are not being installed.

If it's really really stuck: hold down the power button to shut off the Mac and press the power button again to start it up. Wait to see if the bar progresses. (You can bring up de Log window again.)

If that doesn't work, restart the Mac while pressing Cmd, Option, P and R. This will reset the NVRAM. Wait until the computer restarts and wait to see if it starts updating.

How many partitions on the external SSD? The partition you are installing to, is it the first/only partition on the drive?

Thank you all for your answers.

I got the installation going like this:

    1) downloaded the installer again when the new version was available

    2) Reformatted the stick and remade the bootable installer using Apple's directions

    3) Started the installation and had supper when the installer showed "less than 1 minute"

    4) did the dishes and found that the installation had finished successfully

However Apple calculates that ONE minute, it almost took an hour to finish from that point on.

    Best regards
