I understand that you'd like to end a phone call without having to unlock your iPhone and opening the phone app. Next time, try pressing the Sleep/Wake button, and that should do the trick.

Once I've done this, the sleep/wake button doesn't work in this way at least on my phone. Is there a special trick for when the screen is locked?

I understand that tapping the Sleep/Wake button once doesn't work for you. I did this test this out on my end, and it seems to be working fine for me. I do apoligize about not being able to completely help you out the first time. Next time you end a call, try tapping the power button two times and see if that ends the call. The reason why I'm suggesting this is because after looking into this further around the communities I've seen reports of other people saying that the case on their iPhone was preventing the Sleep/Wake button from working properly, just in case if you did have an iPhone case on, if not it doesn't hurt to test it out.
If you are still having problems, let's try these troubleshooting steps. If you are still having problems after performing these steps please don't hesitate to let us know and we'll try to help you to get this resolved!
- Try testing to see if you can end a call with the Sleep/Wake button by tapping it once, or two times without your phone case on, if you do have one on your iPhone. If you're able to end the call without the case on, the problem might be from the case that's preventing the Sleep/Wake button from completely functioning properly.
- Make sure you're using the latest iOS version
- Restart your iOS device
