Thank you for providing the information I requested. The age of your iMac is the issue (I am still running that model of iMac myself). Although AirDrop is available on the 2011 iMac, the feature is only useable between two supported Macs. To use AirDrop with an iPhone and a Mac, your iMac would have to at least be from 2012. Here is a list of all Macs compatible with AirDrop and Continuity (Handoff, Instant Hotspot etc).
OS X Yosemite: supported devices for Handoff, Instant Hotspot, Phone Calling, SMS, and AirDrop
You aren't out of luck when it comes to file sharing options though. iCloud Drive can make up some of the functionality offered by AirDrop. You can move files into your iCloud Drive from Finder on you Mac, and enable the iCloud Drive homescreen icon on your iPhone. By default, any application you have enabled with iCloud Drive will have its own folder, but you can always manually create your own folders, or move files without a folder, on your Mac and open them in compatible apps on your iPhone. Here is a list of more detailed instructions on using iCloud Drive on all of your devices

Best of luck
