Q: non-downloaded music playing over cellular though not enabled !

Iphone 6S, ios 9.3.2

This is an extremely strange problem.  Maybe I'm just not understanding how the phone works, so that's why I'm here....

I have quite a bit of songs I've bought over iTunes over the years.  I only have a handful of them actually physically synced and loaded to my phone.  The rest I choose to listen to only over wifi when I'm at home.

I have the music over cellular option turned OFF

I bought a Toyota Camry a few months ago, and the other day I noticed when I asked Siri through the Siri Hands Free function in the car to "play all songs", my ENTIRE song list was available to play.  Even songs that shouldn't be downloaded to the phone, and that should only play over wifi.  I verified the music over cellular option was turned off, and it was still showing off.

I then went to see if it was only when I asked Siri to play music, or if it would do it if I went to my song catalog from within the Toyota Entune screen.  Sure enough, all of my songs were listed and I could play even non-downloaded songs.

So once I got back to my house, I was curious, and I turned off my wifi on the phone and tried to play the non-downloaded songs, and of course it gave me the correct prompt that I needed to turn on wifi or cellular data.

Tonight after driving the car, I was sitting in the parking lot experimenting, and it got even more strange.....

The iphone was first hooked to the car via a lightning cable.  I don't think anything to the car really syncs via cable....I believe it's all bluetooth, which was engaged and the phone synced up to the car.

Of course I had the same problem where my entire song catalog was showing and available.  So I unplugged my phone from the cable....turned off bluetooth, AND turned of cellular data by putting the phone into Airplane mode....

ALL OF MY SONGS  still proceeded to be available and play even with all these options turned off....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't only my physically downloaded songs to the phone be playing if there's no data connection?

What is going on here?

I even just went into my settings to check my storage useage and under the music category, it is only showing the songs I have elected to have downloaded to the phone....

It seems obvious to me there is a huge bug that is causing the option to not play music over cellular data to be ignored, even when the phone is in something like Airplane mode.

Do you subscribe to iTunes Match?  Do you use Apple Music?

If so, your songs may well be available through the iCloud Music Library.  Turn off the iCloud Music Library if one of the above is true.

Use iTunes Match on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

There is no "bug" in my opinion.

You are fooling around with the "how" at the expense of the "what".

If you are using iTunes Match or Apple Music, that is the "what".  You have said you would like some amount of access to iCloud to get to your music.

The "what" is the method of access - WiFi, cellular, etc.  You are saying disabling WiFi, cellular, etc. should override saying you want to access iTunes Match or Apple Music.  But doing that would imply you could not access iCloud Notes, Calendars, emails, etc.  Would you really like some but not all your Notes, calendar entries safari bookmarks, photos, etc. to maybe but maybe not be available depending on what you said about WiFi and cellular data access?  Isn't it much more straightforward to address the "what" you wish to have available?

I do not subscribe to iTunes Match, and I cancelled Apple Music after the trial.

Still.....music that's not physically downloaded to the phone should not be playing if there's no cellular or wifi connection, correct?

Strangely, some of my non-downloaded songs will play and some (but very few) will trigger the prompt that I need to be connected to wifi or cellular data.

If the songs play while cellular data and Wi-Fi are OFF, they are on your device. Check your syncing preferences in iTunes.

My understanding is that songs physically downloaded to my phone can be played at anytime, anywhere.

Now, I have all kinds of other songs in my music app that aren't downloaded to the phone but show up in my music, since I purchased them.  I should be able to play these songs ONLY over wifi, OR if I have the enable music of cellular option enabled.  I do not have the cullular music option enabled, nor am I connected to Wifi.....so why should these songs play?   And why are some, but not all, of my non-downloaded songs playing when not data connected and some will not?

    ....

So I just signed out of my apple id account, and signed back in......now non of my non-downloaded songs are showing up in my music list.  Only my chosen downloaded songs are appearing.  I assume they will appear again once I connect to wifi once I get home.  But I will be curious to see if after I connect back to wifi, and then leave wifi for cellular only again, if the problem will manifest itself again, or if signing out and back in maybe fixed something?

Signing out of your Apple ID was a good idea!

In case songs you are not expecting to see re-appear, you might also consider resetting the iPhone.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

You may have had bits and pieces laying around after your Apple Music trial.

By the way, since you now have neither iTunes Match nor Apple Music, that means that you do not have any songs in iCloud Music Library.

So the only way you could be accessing music that is not on the iPhone itself would be to somehow do a WiFi sync to the music on your computer.

So, as Rysz suggested, carefully check your syncing preferences in iTunes.  That is where you would have enabled WiFi sync.  (Do not only check that - check all aspects of your music sync criteria.)
