Happy Saturday, Marlyn94!
It sounds like your Music app is crashing when you try to play a song. I know it's important to be able to play songs on your iPhone - I'm glad you came to the Apple Support Communities for help!
Use the guide below to fix this behavior:
If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
Since the Music app isn't from the App Store, you won't be able to delete it as the article suggests. Instead, if you continue to experience this issue after following the above steps, use this guide to create a backup of your device:
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
From there, restore your iPhone as this guide shows:
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
Cheers!
I have an iPod 4th generation that worked fine (although I hadn't used it in awhile, it updated to the most recent software available when I charged it up this past weekend, that would be iOS 9.3.5.) Since then, I cannot use the Music app any longer. Everything else works fine, but the Music app has a couple of issues. It doesn't respond to touch: it's very sluggish if it responds to touch at all, sometimes it doesn't. Many times, I'll touch a song to play and nothing happens. It's just "stuck." Other times, the app just crashes, as the OP said. I've restored the iPod to factory settings as suggested, and that did not help...I'm still having this issue.
Any other suggestions? I would really like to use the Music app on my iPod because IOS 10 screwed up my Music on my iPhone as well. I'm not very happy with Apple right now.
