Q: Aperture is slow with high-MP files

I am using the latest version of Aperture and OSX on a maxed-out 27" iMac (late 2012): SSD storage, 32 GB RAM, 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB.

Recently I switched from Canon to Sony (a7r II/42 mp files). I shoot in RAW (compressed) and noticed Aperture is very slow when browsing the files. It takes around 5 sec. to load its preview and then I can edit it without hassle. I get a lot of spinning rainbows when browsing one file after another. It is a real pain...

My settings are:

- Import - Camera previews

- Previews - Photo preview 2560/2560; Quality 7

My library is managed (on external SSD via thunderbolt with more than enough space left) and it contains 38K files. I have successfully repaired the library and optimised the database.

Is there a way to speed up Aperture? I really don't want to switch to another RAW converter. I've tried most of them and they are all missing something from Aperture.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

More than enough space is an opinion - How much free space do you have? (some people think 500 MP is more than enough - the number would be good)

I have no experience with compressed RAW files but I suspect that the slowness is strictly a function of opening them since that is a  CPU intensive task

185 GB free of 999 GB.

The iMac's CPU is quad-core and it was the top of the line option when I purchased the computer 3 years ago. I know that CPUs evolve with every year, but still... It is not that slow. I also have a plenty of RAM.

Aperture's support is cut off, but I hoped someone would recommend some settings related to the preview of the images, which I think is the cause.
