Q: Can't move iTunes library

I just bought a new Mac and I am running OS X El Capitan 10.11.5. I want to move my iTunes library to my external hard drive (Seagate Backup Plus Drive) but I can't drag and drop the file. After spending a couple of hours reading tutorials and watching YouTube videos on how to perform this task I finally gave up and decided to just create a new library (holding down the option key as I launch iTunes). It won't let me create a new library using my external hard dive either. What am I missing here?

    Hello loreknives

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community, and congrats on your new Mac! There are a few possible reasons you may not be able to drag and drop the library, but I'll try to help you get to the bottom of things and work with the community to find a solution.

The first thing I'd recommend checking is the formatting on the Seagate. Many external drives are formatted to be read by both Mac and PC, but only written to by PC.  You can reformat the hard drive using the Disk Utility on your Mac. This Article will walk you through how to do so : Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

This article refers to aperture specifically, but the process is the same. Just as a heads up, formatting the drive will remove all of the information on it, so if you have any important files on there you want to copy them to your Mac before formatting.

If you've already formatted the drive, and are still having trouble, let us know. The whole community is here to help.

    -Best regards-
