Drag and drop isn't supported from iPhone to computer.

Sync using iTunes or iCloud >  Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all your devices - Apple Support

Are you using iCloud Photo library on the iPhone? Then syncing using a USB connection will give random results. The problem is, that you can only transfer photos from the camera roll by a USB connection. If you are using iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone, use it on the Mac as well, and that would require using the Photos for Mac application and not iPhoto.

If you are not using iCloud Photo Library, explain in more detail what the "hazzle" is - does iPhoto not see the iPhone at all, or does it just not launch? Then launch it manually after connecting the iPhone. Does Image Capture see the iPhone?

Photos should open automatically, if the Camera Roll on the iPhone has new photos. And if the check mark is enabled "Open Photos for this device" (the checkmark is below the Photos toolbar in the Import panel).

If Photos does not open, it might be a problem with the iPhone. Is it fully charged?  hvae you tried a different USB port? A different cable?

I Generally have to do that. Reconnect. It's a hit or a miss. But recently it's getting worse. So i wanted to see if there was any alternative.

If you need to disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, it might be caused by My Photo Stream.  Are you using My Photo Stream?
