Q: iTunes Downloads/Library

I have about 9,000 songs in my iTunes library but only 7,000 of them sync to my old iPod classic (which I don't really use except as a disc). Also, the songs that don't sync don't play on iTunes on my Mac. These are mostly songs I uploaded (and not iTunes purchases) but not entirely. iTunes Match is on and all indications are that the songs are downloaded to the computer (when I right click and go to "get info"). However, when I go to the iTunes music folder in finder and look for the files for these songs, those files are not there. What gives?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

What happens when you right-click on one of these songs and select "Show in Finder"? Do any of the tracks show an exclamation mark on the left? Is there a checkbox visible left of the track name? If yes, does it show a tick mark? If not, open iTunes Preferences > General and activate the appropriate View function.
