Q: Can I use the lan Ethernet port on airport express to output music ?

Can I use the Ethernet connections on airport express to output music over wifi to a set of speakers? I would be using a Ethernet connector on one end to a 5 pin din to a set of beolab 2500/2300 speakers. I don't want to use the audio pin output on the airport express, as it is analog. Can music be output thru either of the Ethernet connections on the back of airport express? Thanks

    Sorry, but no.

Perhaps you were not aware that the audio port on the AirPort Express delivers either analog or digital audio, depending on the type of connector that is used. See this link on the Specifications of the AirPort Express to confirm.......http://www.apple.com/airport-express/specs/

In other words, to have the Express deliver analog audio, connect a standard stereo mini plug with appropriate connectors on the other end.  To have the Express deliver digital audio, connect a mini Toslink cable to the audio port on the AirPort Express.  An example is in this link......Airport Express Toslink - Amazon.com

Thanks for the info Bob, so let me ask this. I have a cable I bought from England, Sounds Heavenly, that made me a 5 din to an audio connector using the audio port. Can I still use this connector if I plug it into a male/female adapter (if one is made) for toslink?  What I'm trying to accomplish is not using the audio port of the airport express unit because then the sound volume has to be turned up to 100%.  I would like to connect the airport express directly to a Bang & Olufsen beolink 2300 5 or 8 pin Powerlink (male) to one of the other ports on the airport express unit. Hope this makes sense. Thanks

Sorry, but this will not work. If you want audio from the AirPort Express, you will need to use the audio output port. There are no other options.

If you connect  to the audio port on the AirPort Express using a 3.5 mm stereo mini plug and you add a DIN adapter, it should work if things are wired correctly.  But, you cannot add a DIN adapter to a Toslink cable.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate all that info. Your answer helped eliminate the possibility of what I was trying to do.
