Jul 3, 2016 8:50 AM in response to Dobbler1by Bob Timmons,Was the Time Capsule previously set up to work with another modem or modem/router? If yes, do you recall the make and model number of the device?
-
Jul 4, 2016 4:44 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Dobbler1,Yes, the Time Capsule was previously set up but my service before was DSL (with fibro optics). I guess in that setup, the Time Capsule served as the modem because there was no other modem only the Time Capsule.

Jul 4, 2016 5:26 AM in response to Dobbler1by Bob Timmons,Thanks for the info. I was hoping that your previous product was also a modem/router or gateway device.....like the ATT NVG 599.
If the Time Capsule was providing your wireless network service previously, are you able to "see" the settings for the Time Capsule if you open up AirPort Utility......(Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility).....and then click on the picture of the Time Capsule and click Edit in the smaller window that appears? The Time Capsule indicator light will likely be blinking amber, and there may be a notice that you do not have an Internet connection or DNS, etc. Don't worry about that for now.
If you are able to get to the settings, the top of the window will look similar to this:
Sorry for the questions, but the goal here is to try to avoid having to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then starting all over again with a totally new setup. With luck, we'll only have to change a few settings, which will make things much easier.
Although it may be necessary to start all over again, so pease keep that in mind if a few "shortcuts" are not going to work.

Jul 4, 2016 8:20 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Dobbler1,Hi, I am not able to get to the Airport Utility. When I go to Finder>Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility, I only see 'Internet'. I think this is because the Time Capsule is only getting electrical power and not connected to the internet setup. How do I plug it in since the system is totally on the ATT Uverse hookup?

Jul 4, 2016 8:47 AM in response to Dobbler1by Bob Timmons,Power off both the ATT modem/router and Time Capsule
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the four LAN <--> ports on the back of the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Power up the ATT modem/router and let it run a full minute
Then, power up the Time Capsule and let it run a full minute
Make sure that you are connected to the wireless network signal from the Time Capsule......not the ATT wireless.....then try the AirPort Utility "test" again and report on your results, please.

Not sure what you mean.
A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme......which is a wireless router......with the only difference being that the Time Capsule includes a built in hard drive designed to store backups from Time Machine.
A Time Capsule is not a modem/router or gateway device though......if that is what you meant to say......since there is no modem on board with any of the Apple routers.
Finally, the OP is not trying to replace the ATT modem/router with a Time Capsule, he is trying to connect the Time Capsule to the ATT device so that it can be used for Time Machine backups.

Jul 4, 2016 9:04 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Csound1,I meant to type modem not router, but I missed
-
Jul 4, 2016 9:13 AM in response to Csound1by Bob Timmons,Thanks for the clarification. Regardless of what you meant to type, the OP is not trying to replace the modem/router with a Time Capsule, he's trying to connect the Time Capsule to the modem/router.
Would you have any advice about that other than what has been mentioned.......1) Try to get the TC working without having to reset it back to factory defaults....and if that does not work, then 2) Reset the TC back to factory defaults and start over again.
-
Jul 4, 2016 9:19 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Csound1,My tendency would be to reset to factory defaults and start over (using bridge mode)
It was in response to this and had I typed it correctly might actually have made some sense

Jul 4, 2016 9:28 AM in response to Csound1by Bob Timmons,But if it is something simple like changing to DHCP from PPPoE, or from DHCP and NAT to Bridge Mode, a few clicks will be all that is needed. Quite a bit more work to reset the TC back to defaults and start over......and Time Machine will want to make a new complete backup of the Mac as well, taking up a lot more space on the drive, rather than simply continuing with existing backups.
True, it may be necessary to reset the TC and start over if a few simple changes won't fix things, but starting all over should be a last resort, not the first. You may disagree, though.

Jul 4, 2016 9:42 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Csound1,I tend to do things the long way round, but that's just me I guess.

Jul 4, 2016 9:48 AM in response to Csound1by Bob Timmons,Suggest that we wait and see to find out which approach.....simple or complicated....that the OP wants to try first.

Jul 4, 2016 9:55 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Csound1,Of course, your way is quicker. I would attempt yours first, then there may be nothing else needed.
