How do you know it is charging. No light

You can see it on the TV in Setup>Remotes and Devices. If you enter the Remote, it shows the charge level, but I don't know if it shows that it's charging. You can use the remote while connected, and because it's Bluetooth, you don't have to aim it (though I usually do, force of habit).
Following testing, I determined that the battery display in Remotes and Devices changes to a white rectangle with a lightning bolt, showing that it is connected to power.
Thanks Diana. You have pretty much answered my question. I just thought there might be a light on the apple remote to show it was charging and when it was fully charged so you don't have to go to the tv to check. Oh well, maybe Apple will come up with something. Thanks again for your excellent replies.
Since the remote only needs charging every few months, it seems like a light would be a lot of extra baggage in a tiny device.
If your remote needs charging more often, you may have a dud. Some have been reported.
