Why can't I highlight original pdf with iBooks' preview while I can from preview only?

I have what appear to be a permission issue when I modify a book from iBooks' preview:

The message I get is something like "this document can't be modified: a copy has been created", in french.

If I modify the same document without opening it from iBooks, the original pdf is overwritten without any difficulty by preview app.
