I can't use my new printer (Epson XP-235) because i haven't downloaded the driver and utilities required. My epson software update informs me that this download is distributed by Apple Inc.'s software updater. When i open App store there are no updates available for me to download.

Yes, the drivers are built in to the system and updated with the system. You can find them in /Library/Printers.

Did you look on Epson's support site for your printer to see if the driver can be downloaded from them?

Then follow the instructions in the article on how to set up a printer. If the driver was included or can be downloaded, then that is where you get it done. Usually, if the printer is connected and turned on at the time you are setting up OS X for the first time, then you will be asked if you want to download the driver assuming it is not already available in the installation files.
Fixed - downloaded from Epson Printer Drivers v3.2 for OS X. then had to restart computer and printer to get it to realise it was up to date
