How do I airdrop to myself without turning "everyone" on...

....as it were...

i'm trying to airdrop from my iPad (signed into iCloud as me) to my macbook pro (El Capitan, signed in to iCloud as me). But i can only do it if I have "discoverable by everyone" turned on. i want to use "only in my contacts" instead. This is ridiculous: my iCloud profile info is in my contacts as "me", so both devices should bloody well know it's me. I certainly don't want to open my devices to the world, so why is this most basic of use cases not covered?

or, as is more likely the case, what am I doing wrong? (Ps: using latest OS and iOS)

just to be clear: airdrop IS working, but only when I turn "everyone" on...

thanks for your ideas!
