Q: Problem turning off Effects in FCP

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

If so have you managed to resolve it?

The problem is that if I need to put effects on the first clip in a film series FCP automatically adds these effects to every single section of each clip in the rest of the film series.

I can turn these off, either in the Inspector panel or in video animation, by unchecking each individual box for each section of film on each clip. But when FCP is turned off at night, it reinstates the effects again.

One other point, it isn’t just adding the effects as a checked box visual issue, because clips show up as needing rendering, and will compress as a much larger file if I miss unchecking one of the boxes.

Also many of these film files are taking much longer to compress when this problem happens, so I suspect that FCP is treating them as larger files with effects on them, even when these are turned off.

I’ve tried trashing the preference files but that didn’t resolve the problem

Perhaps posting a screenshot showing your problem will help.

I don't know what you mean by a "film series". Adding an effect to any clip does not affect any other clip, so there is probably something I'm missing.

Maybe you are adding an effect to a compound clip? If so, then add it to individual clips inside the compound, and not the compound itself. By I'm just guessing.

Please clarify exactly what you are doing, if possible with screenshots.

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

My work requires me to make a series of short film sequences (clips) from a film shoot and make separate versions for two or more people

My workflow is to set up a library and then an event (for person 1). I import the entire film into the event. I then create a project (say project 1) and insert a film sequence from the event into the project. I edit it. Then I create a second project in the same event (Project 2) and insert film sequence from the event into this project, and so on until I've created separate projects for all the film I've imported into the event.

This is where I am finding that effects put onto the first project are replicating themselves onto all the subsequent projects I create in that event.

So from what you say, I gather that by doing this I am creating compound clips?

To avoid this happening, does it mean that  each time I want to make a separate project, I must first create a separate event for it, then import the film into the event and use that event for just the one project?

No, you do not have to do this, but you're doing something else incorrectly. If you edit a clip into a project and apply an effect to the clip in the project it will not effect any other piece of the clip in the project or in another project. If you're duplicating projects, use duplicate as snapchat so the projects might not contain material like compound clips that will ripple into other projects.

Unfortunately the terminology you use is somewhat strange, which makes it difficult to follow your step-by-step procedure. Again screenshots might be helpful to see what's going on in the interface.

    Thanks for your help

Perhaps I should have said that this issue only started affecting FCP as from early 2016. Previously, if I added an effect to a project, it just applied to that project and didn't affect other projects in the same event. I did update my Mac to El Capitan at about that time, which is why I tried trashing the preference files.

(I don't have permission to display the content of this particular film via screenshots until after it has been released)

I still don't know what you mean by a "film series"...

    Let us say you:

    - have an event, called, say, Event1, with clips A,B,C

    - create new project Project1 and drag A, B, C to Project1 timeline;

    - add effects to clips in Project1 timeline -

    now

    - create new Project2 and drag A,B,C to Project2 timeline

The effects you applied in Project1 will NOT be in Project2.

(By the way, this is irrespective of which event contains the projects; they may all be in the same event or not, it doesn't matter)

You need to very clearly detail your workflow so we understand what is going wrong. You are doing something different from what I describe above.

    Hi and thanks

The work flow you describe is the one that I am using.

The issue started when I used the crop/distort/transform effects, around the time I updated to El Capitan. Prior to that I did not have this problem

Not only do these effects infest every single project I have in an event but, on occasion, FCP has applied them to new libraries I've set up (where I hadn't used these effects)

I appreciate that this is not supposed to happen but it does.

I have tried setting up a new user and then using FCP from the new user I've created, and the problem still happens

It used to take me a few minutes to compress films using Compressor, now it takes ages.

Are you using the open in timeline function?

Can't really help you without exact information. The problem has not been reported before, and I can't reproduce it in any way.

I understand that you cannot post screenshots of the actual movie you are editing.

But since this seems to be happening in any libraries, maybe you can create a small library for demonstration purposes and post screenshots from that.

You may also want to uninstall FCP X and download a fresh copy from the App Store. Use FCS Remover from Digital Rebellion to completely wipe FCP X from your system and then install anew. (Obviously this does not touch your libraries or media)

    Hi

No I wasn't using the open in time line function

I assume the only thing to do is struggle through my current editing project, then contact Apple and find out how to delete FCP and re-download it.  Hopefully that won't involve having to re-downloading flip4mac, Compressor and Digital Anarchy's Beauty Box.

Thanks to everyone who did their best to help

Unfortunately the pressure of my current job means that I can't stop and create a new library for demonstration purposes.

Thanks very much for your suggestion of Digital Rebellion to get rid of my current version of FCP. Once I've finished my current project I'll do that
