Q: 17" Macbook Pro 2006 won't start up

I have a 2006 Macbook Pro that won't start up. There is a power light and a full battery. On pressing the power button, just a brief whir from the CD drive but then nothing, blank screen, no startup chime etc. The machine was fine until someone tried to start it up with an external drive already plugged in via USB. There was nothing in the CD drive at the time but have since put a CD into the drive to see if anything happened and that is now stuck in the machine. No screen available to eject it. Have tried ejecting using the eject button on the keyboard but nothing happens.

Any ideas how to bring it back to life?

Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:

Then try a safe boot:

If no change, try to run an Apple Hardware Test:

Thanks but I cannot do any of these tests as I get nothing showing on the screen and no start up chime. I press the power button and the power light immediately comes on and the CD drive sounds like it is running, but that is it, nothing at all on screen, no reaction to the keyboard or trackpad. Could the machine be stuck in sleep mode?? I get no light on the keyboard when I press Caps Lock.
