Problem connecting to Windows Server 2012 r2 with Mac Connector

I cannot connect my MacBook Pro to my Windows Server 2012 r2 on an HP Laptop. I am new to using servers and installed it for a small home business (only 2 MacBook users on the network). I can connect to the server using smb://<name of server>/ but it is only one-way (can't connect from server to MacBook). Using http://<server name>/connect in a browser (as directed) doesn't work. I downloaded the Mac Connector and when I put the server address in the box to connect, it still doesn't work. I know I am using the correct server name. Any help with this one? I'm using El Capitan.
