Try a different brand of DVD.
But as CD and DVD use different lasers inside the drive it's not uncommon for one to fail and the other to still work.

Jul 5, 2016 10:39 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby jjmcdonald,Did both of those. I guess the Drive is dying on the DVD portion. It is a 4 year old machine, so repairs are more expensive then a portable USB superdrive, which is what I am going to do next.

Jul 5, 2016 3:47 PM in response to jjmcdonaldby Mike Sombrio,Probably your best move. Don't buy Apples USB Superdrive though, it won't work with Macs that have a built in drive and it's way overpriced for what it does. You can get a nice LG unit for less than $30 at Amazon and practically anywhere else.

Jul 5, 2016 4:05 PM in response to jjmcdonaldby rkaufmann87,You may want to consider cleaning the drive. The drive has 2 lasers in it, one for DVD and the other for CDs. If you only have a problem with the DVDs the laser for it may be dirty. You can get a cleaning kit from any office supply store, just ask for a CD/DVD cleaning kit. However on the other hand just replacing it may be easier. BTW, Apple has not installed DVD drives on iMacs in at least 5 years so your machine is a minimum of a 2011 iMac!
