Q: iMac Wifi Connectivity Issues

I live in a home with a Motorola SB6141 modem connected to a Airport Extreme router which feeds wifi to 2 iPhones, iMac, laptop, smart tv, directv receivers, 2 iPads.  Nothing is connected with Ethernet.

We have an issue when the iMac is in use. Network keeps dropoung and modem needs reset  Now it seems nothing can keep the connection from dropping.  Doesn't seem to be Time Warner as they have been out and when the iMac is off for hours there is no issues. Turn on the imac and simple Internet surfing drops connection for the whole network.

Its becoming a huge pain and I have not idea where to go from here.

AMany suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello Lucas1109,

After reviewing your post, It sounds like you have 8 devices connecting to an Airport extreme and the internet service drops out when you connect the iMac to the network through Wi-Fi. It sounds like there may be interference between the devices. This article has a list of things that can cause interference with the other devices.

Potential sources of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference - Apple Support

To minimize interference between your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, try the following:

    1. Change channels on your wireless network. For AirPort Base Stations or AirPort Time Capsule, reset the base station and it will attempt to use the 2.4 and 5 GHz channels with the least interference when it starts up.
    2. Connect to a 5 GHz wireless network (if possible).
    3. Move your computer and Wi-Fi router (like your AirPort Base Station) closer to each other.
    4. Minimize the number of active Bluetooth wireless devices you have connected to your computer or nearby.

Wireless Diagnostics can also help you evaluate your Wi-Fi environment.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Have a nice day.

Thanks for trying all of those steps. Since this seems to be narrowed down to the iMac, your next steps would be to narrow down and resolve this issue on the iMac, and here are a couple of ways to do that:

    1. Use Safe Mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

    2. Next, if you are still have the issue after starting your iMac into Safe Mode and restart again normally, you would want to narrow this down to a system wide issue with the Mac, or a user specific issue, by testing again in a new user on your iMac.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    3. Another way to narrow this down would be to add a new network location to System Preferences > Network in case your existing network settings are causing this issue.

OS X El Capitan: Add a network location

Cheers and have a great day!
