Q: Home Sharing keeps dropping out

Hello,

I have an Apple TV 3rd generation and use it to play music through iTunes and Home Sharing. My Computer is installed with Windows 10 with the latest updates installed as well as my Apple TV with the latest updates. I also use a Netgear AC3200 Nighthawk Router and a Netgear AC1200 Range Extender which I have all the latest updates and Firmware installed.

After playing music for about 10-15 minutes the music will stop and I get a message on my TV telling me to turn on home sharing on iTunes. This just started happening recently over the last week or so. I have looked up various solutions like making sure my firewall allows iTunes access which it does. I have even moved my Apple TV to a closer location to my PC and my. I am using Home Share through a wireless connection and I do not have a way to connect it through Ethernet. How can I solve this problem, it gets very annoying having restart iTunes every 15 minutes to play music.

Thank you

Apple TV, Windows 10

How does the Range extender work, the Apple TV doesn't seem to like repeaters.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

    Thank you,

Here how I usually run my Apple TV, I have 5 different wireless connections Netgear69, Netgear69-5G-1, Netgear69_2GEXT, Netgear69-5G-2, Netgear69-5G-2_5GEXT, Th one I use most is Netgear69 which is a 2.4GHz. as I mentioned I have move my AppleTV to a different location. I don't usderstand why this is happening, it worked fine last week. Also my router and WI-FI skills are very limited, I really do not now how to change some of the settings you suggested.

    Thanks

In your initial post, you mentioned that you moved ATV closer to the PC. That makes no difference, because all WiFi traffic goes through the router.

The fact that Home Sharing works, then drops out, does seem to indicate some type of interference. That might be other WiFi signals, or other devices using the 2.4 GHz band, especially Bluetooth devices.

Are these all wifi access points

Yes I believe they are, I use them to connect to the internet. This might be helpful too. My PC is connected to the internet through WI-FI as well, I have the NETGEAR AC1200 USB WI-FI Adapter. It is the only way to get the internet on my computer.

So basically I go from ISP radio signal to my ISP antenna, a hard wire to my Wireless router, I have three devices connected to my router on being a switch but most everything else is WI-FI. SAT TV Hopper and Joey's, receivers, Amazon Fire, 2 Apple TV's (Upstairs and Downstairs). I can steam video on my SAT TV using Netflix, on Amazon Fire, and upstairs ATV with no issues. the only problem I have is streaming music between Home Share on Downstairs ATV and PC.

Now I just checked something I have a program called NETGEAR Genie (Pict) Sometimes when I open it up there is and (X) between NETGEAR69 and Internet like it has timed out or lost connection, I think this is the culprit. I guess is there a way to have one individual connection between my PC and Apple TV, a specific channel, port, address?

    Thank you

It may well be, but since you use the word sometimes the cause is clearly intermittent. You have a lot of access points, why is this are they necessary.

The X just indicates that you've lost the internet connection. That has nothing to do with Home Sharing. You say your ISP connects over radio. So, do you have some sort of receiver/modem to convert that signal to ethernet? Do you know what frequency band that radio uses?

It is a bit distressing that you have so many different WiFi networks. It might help if you connect ATV and PC to the same subnetwork. As I said before, all traffic goes through the router; there's no direct link between the two.

I think I figured it out, I uninstalled Malwarebytes and installed a different anti-virus  program. Now ATV seems to work with no issues.

Thank you for all the help

The OP said Windows 10, never mentioned any Macs.

I think I said that in the other place, which is why I was hoping for some input from Thomas.
