Q: Need help With Apple tv airplay

I have a 2012 Macbook pro with El capitan and I'm trying to airplay an online tv show to my 3rd gen apple tv and onto my big lcd tv. Both units are up to date with software, macbook firewall is turned off. I get the sound on the tv but no picture. The apple tv is connected directly to the sony tv via hdmi. The apple tv works flawlessly on its own.what am i doing wrong?

Are you sure you can airplay the TV show, some providers block the video, in such cases all you will get is the audio.

No I don't think that is the issue because even at my desktop screen its blank on the tv. It won't mirror anything on my macbook screen. Sound does work and it says speakers as a header and my 2 Apple tvs below. No where does it say airplay display like some tutorials online say should be present?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

    1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    2. Check that both devices are on the same network (System Preferences > Network, on the Mac and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    6. Restart your computer.

If you are still having problems, try turning off bluetooth if it's enabled, also try using 802.11n for wifi if you are currently using either 802.11b or 802.11g.

This reluctance to show video may be caused by a copy protection problem (HDCP) in the HDMI connection to the TV. Before you restart everything to resolve network issues, put ATV and TV to sleep and disconnect and carefully reconnect both ends of the HDMI cable.
