Q: Looking for advice on computer move..

I'm moving from a 2011 27" iMac to a new 27" iMac. I made a time machine backup of the old one before I wiped it. Can anyone foresee any issues with just doing a full recover from the time-machine BU, replacing everything on the new one? The backup was from El Cap, which is presumably what will be on the new one. My primary concern is avoiding having to reinstall my adobe applications (PS, illustrator, indesign, incopy), cinema 4D, and Logic X (+plugins of course) because it's soooo time-consuming.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Please carefully read and follow the directions in Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

I tried to use migration when I set up this temporary computer (mini running el cap), and it failed horribly. Then, reading up on it, I discovered that, except for the very simplest of moves- it is sketchy at best, with many reports that it will fail to move important files for adobe suite, license files for AU plugs, and other issues. Even the successful migrations, which seem to be just documents (which you could manually copy in minutes), report hours, overnight, or nearly 2 days to complete. The whole point is not to spend days getting back to work, so it seems counter-productive even if it does work. I did read about using the time machine backup method, but couldn't find enough details, nor the key differences between migrating and restoring. I was aware of TM, Migration Assistant, and cloning (which i don't think is an option based on a TM backup) before wiping the old computer. The most important point with regard to the support page above, is that I don't have the other computer, so connecting the machines isn't an option. I was hoping a fellow designer or musician could confirm which method works for certain, or whether I should just bite the bullet and install everything from scratch, which basically takes a work day, then another to work out the kinks (presets, fonts, preferences etc.)

Migration Assistant works perfectly if the directions are followed. I have used it for about 10 years with multiple Macs and have NEVER had an issue. Simply connect the old computer's Time Machine backup to the new computer, launch MA on the new computer and then follow the on-screen instructions. It could not be more simple.

If your present computer is working satisfactorily you can do what I did. I purchased a new iMac to replace an old 2008 iMac recently and instead of using the data migration method I used SuperDuper to make a clone to an external HD from the old computer and "restored" it to the new one. I was up and running within a half hour with the new machine and have had no problems at all over the several months I've been using it The only difference between the two machines is that the new one is much faster than the old one. You can use either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to do the job. Incidentally, I make fresh clones onto external HDs weekly from all of my computers so I always have a complete backup standing by for emergencies.

Rick brings up a good point and one that I have tried with great success too. I have used the clone method and have also use MA assistant and restored from a clone. Either SuperDuper (I also use it) or Carbon Copy Cloner are the apps needed to create the clone.
