So, if you can afford to wait until you checked if everything migrated correctly and you are sure, that you no longer will need iPhoto to check the descriptions of your events and albums or similar, I would wait a bit, or at least make a copy of the iPhoto Library (Mediathek) on a backup drive.
It just looks like the new Photos Library and the old iPhoto Library were now using twice the storage as before. But Photos is storing the images from the Photos Library in the same pace as the images in your iPhoto Library using hard links. Both libraries together will have at most 20% more storage than the size of one library.
