Recover an unfindable external hard drive on Mac

Hi, I bought a Thomson External hard drive for my mac to use for the backups.

When I first got it, it was exFAT formatted, and I could perfectly use it, but when I tried to set it up as Backup Disk in the Time Machine, something went wrong.

Time Machine tried to format the disk, but this failed, and now it's gone. I also can't find it in the terminal, but the light glows when it's plugged in, so it must be doing something, right? I have no idea what exactly happened or why it's gone, but is there a way to access and format the disk again for mac so I can use it?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
