Q: Canon iR C2880i

I´ve just upgraded to OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.5 and I am trying to make the printer, iR C2880i, work with the system again.

I have tried to connect both via USB (preferably) and ethernet, neither works.

I have removed the printer and also deleted driver and try to reinstall but it doesn´t work.

Canon specify on their homepage (http://www.canon-europe.com/support/products/imagerunner/irc3580-i.aspx?type=dri vers&language=EN&os=OS%20X%2010.11%20(El…) that they have at least 8 drivers (whereof 3 fax drivers) but none of the printer drivers works. They also specify compatibility with OS X 10.11 but not 10.11.5.

Please any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

    compatibility with 10.11 should include 10.11.1 - 10.11.5

however please start with this document

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203343

and USB is preferable for a number of reasons if it's available.

in the event you are unable to resolve this you may wish to review this and proceed as you see fit

    Hi again,

    thank yor for fast answer.

    I´m just using USB-connection now.

I have followed the steps in apple document HT203343 but it doesn´t solve my problem.

Driver called generic postscript doesn´t work.

Driver called Generic PCL can make prints but very pixelated and just black and white.

Driver called 2880i PPD and PS doesn´t work.

Gutenprint doesn´t have any suitable drivers either.

    What do I do?

I don´t want to go back within OS X.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

    Hi Eric,

    thank you.

Resetting the printing system has been done in your suggested way and also the oldfashioned way (In library renamne the folder printers to printers-old and then make an new folder namned Printers).

    The problem persists.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

The iR C2880i uses Canon's proprietary printer language called UFR2. Postscript is an option but if not installed, then you will not be able to use the Canon PS driver, the Canon PPDs or the Generic Postscript driver included with OS X. Since you can use the Generic PCL driver, it confirms that the PCL printer kit is installed in the printer. Note that you can improve the print quality by changing the driver settings from the default 300dpi to 600dpi. But the Generic PCL driver will only print in B&W.

So the driver you need to download from Canon is the UFR2 v10.9.0 which works fine on OS X 10.11.5. I don't know why the Canon Europe web site is also showing the previous v10.8.1 driver as the 10.9 succeeds it. So with this UFR2 v10.9.0 driver installed you can create a network printer using HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol and then selecting the iR C2880 driver via the Use menu.

If you prefer to use USB then you may need to enable the port. Been quite a while since I have worked on that model so if the USB connection does not work with the UFR2 driver then I will have to do some research.

    Thank you very much Pahu.

    This solved the problem.

The printer language called UFR2 was missing and can´t be downloaded at european sites. I find it at Canon us.

    Now it works.

    Thank you again.

    Have a good day.
