Q: How to remove disk file from time machine

I discovered recently that my Time Machine backup file was showing an inactive disk as being backed up in addition to the disk of backup. This has been corrected in the Time Machine Preferences showing the unwanted disk as excluded. I am trying to remove the backups that were performed but am unable to discover how to do this and have not found any information under help or at Apple FAQ - probably because of the way I am forming the question.

What is the correct procedure to remove something from the backup disk file?

Here you go: OS X Yosemite: Remove a backed-up item from your backup disk

(Should work like this in Mountain Lion too)

Only one problem with that article, it had no instructions, other than the brief mention as capable, about removing navigating to a different backup file that had been backed up in addition to the primary. i.e. an old backup for a different operating system contained in in the Backups.backupdb folder.

There also needs to be a warning that large files may take quite a while as there is no indication that the process is in progress.
