Q: "You need to restart your computer.."

A friend of mine shows me his MacBook.

He did not used for a while and nothing appears on the screen when he puts it on.

Since the teeltale lamp of his supply wire was not showing even a green light, we bought a new power supply.

Now the lamp is full on green, but we got the message

"You need to restart your computer...." and again and again.

We need advice please

You haven't provided enough details to make a guess about how to resolve your issue. It may be that you're experiencing Panic Attacks.

Not that the 12" MacBook's power supply does not have a green LED on the power cord, so I expect that you may have either a 2006-2010 MacBook, MacBook Air, or a MacBook Pro. This forum area is for the 12" Retina MacBook Early 2015 or Early 2016.

You may be right about the Macbook version. Whatever, the old power supply has a telltale lamp.

In this case I didn't find a better forum for this.

As for the details, my friend doesnot have any other .

All i know is that he didn't use his computer for a while, maybe one or two years.

The battery seems out of service. the Mac won't start if the battery is mounted. with the new power supply.

    New test this morning:

With the old power supply, the telltale lamp is on. If i  start the Mac it does start, stops immediately and the telltale lamp goes off and remains off.

Back again with the new power supply, again the message: " You need to restart....."

I have 2 original DVDs to re install.

    Please comment.

You may be right about the Macbook version.

There is no, "may be right," to it. If you identify your Mac model and post it to the proper forum area, you would get more responses to your issue, as the posters to this forum area are primarily using a different Mac model than yours. A model that is far less popular than the one that you probably have.

If you click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," it will identify your Mac model.

Type your Mac's serial number into this web site to identify it. The serial number will be printed on the bottom of the laptop. if it has a user replaceble battery, the serial number will be printed inside the battery compartment.

    http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php

    with that serial number:

    Serial Number: W8******8QR

    Model: - MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)

    Codename: - M97

Build Country: - This unit was built in Changhai, China.

Build Year: - This unit was built in 2011.

    Build Week - -

Production Nr.: - This unit was number 1181 to be built that week.

The correct forum area would be MacBook (13-inch, 2006-2010).

I'll request that it be moved to correct area.

You probably need a new battery, at minimum.

    Thanks Lanny !

Before investing in a new battery, i need to know if this machine deserves it. I spent already into a new magsafe power supply.

For the time being I operate with the power supply and am looking for advice about how to repare !

Thanks for the chart of serial numbers. Locally in France Apple has not been able to find my machine in their data base!

Do you have the original OSX installation disks that came with the Mac?  If so, try to install the OSX.

A Snow Leopard retail disk may also work, but it appears that Apple has discontinued the sale of these.  You might find one on ebay.

    Ciao.

Only you can make that decision. As indicated in one of my prior responses, the value of the Mac is limited, wholesale price of $80. IMHO, I would never buy an 8 year computer that needs service and has to be upgraded.

These serial number web sites work worldwide, so I'm at a loss as to why your local Apple folks didn't know about them.

The Apple Hardware Test shows the error code 4SNS/1/400000001:TBIT-0.000.

I am not sure I read the good reason for this.

    Could you please comment.

That is a battery temperature sensor error.  You will need to take the Mac in for service.

    Ciao.

I do not know if this old MacBook  deserves a service which will certainly pass beyong its value. Is there any other way around ?
