Q: How to restore lost Firefox bookmarks?

I did something that was supposed to speed up Firefox but in the process I lost all of my bookmarks.I have a Time Machine backup that has the older Firefox. How can I access that to just restore Firefox to its previous state? Thanks.

    Hello there, BluSky!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I know how important it is to be able to restore files from Time Machine as well. Check out this article about how to Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. Specifically:

Restore from a Time Machine backup

    Restore specific files:

    1. Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu Time Machine icon, or click Time Machine in the Dock.
    2. Find the files to restore:

      • Use the timeline on the edge of the screen to see the files in your Time Machine backup as they were at that date and time. The timeline may also include local snapshots.
      •
      • Use the onscreen up and down arrows to jump to the last time the contents of the window changed. You can also use the search field in a window to find a file, then move through time while focused on changes to that file.
      •
      • Select a file and press Space Bar to preview the file and make sure it's the one you want.
    3. Click Restore to restore the selected file, or Control-click the file for other options.

These steps will allow you to restore Firefox from a specific snapshot.

    Cheers!

I did the steps as indicated but when I started Firefox my bookmarks were still gone.

Open Firefox, click Help>Troubleshooting information, and when that opens, click Profile Folder>Show in Finder. When that folder opens, you can Enter Time Machine, go back to before you lost all your bookmarks and restore the contents of your Profile Folder which is where your bookmarks are stored.

Thank you. It took a bit of clicking but problem solved. Next time I see something about "improving" Firefox, I'll walk away.

Glad to help. One of the advantages of Firefox is the wealth of available extensions which can sometimes improve or add capabilities but caution is still advisable.

BTW, the Profile Folder can be used to transfer your customization of Firefox from one Mac to another or, indeed, from or to Windows. That also applies to Thunderbird if you use Mozilla's email client.
