Q: Apple ID doesn't work on specific machine

My laptops and my mobile devices accept my Apple ID and password.

Since installing El Capitan, the Mac mini does not accept the Apple ID password. It is my only device that has this problem.

I have created a second admin account on the Mac mini and unsuccessfully attempted to log into iTunes or App Store with the Apple ID and password.

I have a second Apple ID I used to attempt to log into iTunes or App Store, without success.

I've reset the iTunes Store cache.

I've deleted a couple Accounts files and tasks.

I've mucked about in Keychain without really knowing enough about it (this is tonight's reading project).

Any ideas?

Did you purchase this Mini new or used?

Did you use your Apple ID with it previously?

The Mac mini was a new purchase a few months ago.

The Apple ID has been used with this machine since it was purchased.

Is the Mac Mini connected to the Internet. With multiple IDs failing, it seems like something could be amiss in the network.

Ok, I guess I got confused because your profile shows a late 2014 Mini running 10.10.

Since I've only heard of such Apple ID problems if the machine had been activated under a different ID previously, I really have no ideas on how to help except to suggest that you take it to your nearest Genius Bar and ask them to troubleshoot the issue. Make sure you take along your purchase receipt (they sometimes want to see that with Apple ID issues).

Yes, I've been browsing for solutions on that mini through the net connection.

The only failures I'm seeing occur when signing on the Apple ID through FaceTime, Messages, App Store, or iTunes Store on that specific machine. Both Apple IDs that I regularly use on several other machines fail on that machine but work fine on every other device.

I expect the problem to be keychain related.

    Thanks!

Do you have any firewalls or security software on that machine that you may not on the others?

I am running OS X Server for El Capitan. It is the house server that hosts mail, DHCP, DNS, DHCP. There are some port forwarding assignments. The configuration for OS X Server was set up for 10.10 and used when the OS was updated to 10.11. I'll look at how OS X Server is configured on that machine in a few hours. I can see how port forwarding might interfere with Apple ID logins for App Store and iTunes Store apps.

I've been trying to find a log that captures a more meaningful error message for the signon failures in App Store or iTunes Store.

    Thanks!

When I use my correct account name and my correct password, I get:

"This action could not be completed. Try again".

When I use my correct account name and a bogus password, I get:

"Your Apple ID or password is incorrect."

    It recognizes the password.

When I attempt to Authorize the machine, I get the same results as above.

I solved my machine's problem. I rebooted the Mac mini using a drive that contains the previous OS (Mavericks I think, OS X 10.10.x).

I started iTunes, which really really wanted me to update to the next version, and attempted to log in. iTunes did not provide the cryptic message "This action could not be completed. Ask again." Instead, iTunes told me to read the incredibly helpful page by Apple at this link:

If you see a -45054 error in the iTunes Store - Apple Support

For me the one line that made it all work again was to perform:

    sudo chmod 1777 /Users/Shared

in a Terminal window, but there are other instructions provided that should be looked at as well. Thanks!
