Q: Ipod can not be identified properly
I cannot sync my ipods to itunes anymore. I have a 5th & 7th gen ipod. I am using windows 10. It's been awhile [months] since I synced or downloaded any music from iTunes but have never had a problem. After purchasing a bunch of new songs from the iTunes store I attempted to sync both my ipods so that they would contain my new songs. I was shocked to see the following message keep popping up. "An ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly." It told me to disconnect and reconnect my ipods and if problem still exist to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall iTunes. The only things that have changed since I last synced several months ago were updates to windows 10, an update to the latest version of iTunes a week ago and an update to the latest version of Systems Mechanic a few days ago.To make matters worse I am computer illiterate. I don't even know the correct questions to ask. I have followed all the easy troubleshooting steps that are recommended. My next question: If I uninstall iTunes will I lose all my songs? I ask this because when I upgraded to my new [and present] computer I didn't make a copy of my songs from my old computer. I thought they were automatically installed in the cloud or something like that. What a shock to see my iTunes library empty on my new computer. Don't ask me how but somehow I managed to transfer the songs from my ipod to my new iTunes library. If reinstalling iTunes doesn't work I will be calling in my brother in-law [computer geek] to help me with the more complicated recommendations and after that I will have to pay a computer tech to visit my house and help me. Is the following any help? I think my computer recognizes my ipod. When I plug it in a small window pops up in the lower right corner that says "Bobs ipod". That's what used to appear on iTunes when iTunes used to recognize me. Also When I plug my ipod in my photo's appear on the screen with some sort of message about nothing to download. It never did that before. Does my computer think my ipod is a camera?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.
Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with third party software.
Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed. Windows will treat an iOS device that has at least one image in the camera roll as a camera so that images can be copied from it.
