Q: Restoring deleted user Server 5.1.5

Had a (network) user account that had something corrupt (long story, got bad advice) and so decided to delete the account altogether and then make new one with the same name. Deleting seemed to go fine (though the user home directory was unaltered, which gives me pause).  Making a new account either with Workgroup Manager or Server fails; I get the message that a user with the same name already exists ("A user already exists with the account name "XXX". Enter a different account name and try again). Now obviously I could just decide to use a new account name, but I'd both like to retain the old one and/or figure out why this dead account still seems to exist somewhere.  Presumably some database somewhere below the GUI retains some vestige of the account.  (And no, you cannot log into the account).  Thanks for any ideas.
