Q: How revert from Photos to iPhoto

I bought my wife a shiny new iMac to replace the old Mac she was using.  I imported her Snow Leopard iPhoto library into  Photos on El Capitan.  The import screwed up dates and mangled the thumbnails.  Following the standard advice, I ran repair (control/option open of Photos) to no avail.  No change.  So I laboriously fixed 12,000 thumbnails with rotate/unrotate, again following advice.  Then I stupidly ran repair again and Photos scrambled the thumbnails again. I need to get back to iPhoto before my wife kills me, but I don't know how to get there from here.  The iPhoto from Snow Leopard does not work.  I bought iLife 11 but that version of iPhoto doesn't work either and the app store won't update it.  What do I do now?

Carl,  only iPhoto 9.6.1 runs on el Capitan, and the new mac can probably only run MAcOS X 10.11. or newer.

If you do not own a version of iPhoto, that is associated with your AppleID at the AppStore, you cannot access any iPhoto update to version 9.6.1.

As you just purchased a new Mac, try to talk Apple Support into providing a redeem code for iPhoto 9.6.1, so you can download iPhoto.9.6.1 from the AppStore. It will only work, if Apple Support helps you. Do you still have Apple Care protection?

I don't know what Apple Care is.  I didn't buy any extra support as I have never needed it before.  In fact, I don't even know how to "talk to Apple Support".  Apple stuff has always just worked.

I own two versions of iPhoto - the prior iPhoto came with iLife (09 I think) but was not purchased from the app store.  Nor was iLife 11.  Do I simply need to register the purchase to enable the update?

No, you cannot convert an iLife license to an App Store license.

You need a version of iPhoto that has been purchased and downloaded from the App Store, or came preinstalled on your Mac at a time, after the App Store has been introduced (on a Mac without installer DVDs).

The big problem is, that Apple stopped developing and selling iPhoto, so it is impossible to obtain a version, that can be updated without Apple Support providing a redeem code for you. To contact Apple Support use the "get Support" button on this page:   https://support.apple.com

It is not guaranteed that they will help in this case, because Apple wants the users to migrate their photo libraries to Photos for Mac.

Explain to the support team that the migration is not working and you need a version of iPhoto that can run on El Capitan to be able to repair the iPhoto Libraries and to prepare them for the migration.

Ah!  Thanks!  Nice logical rational.   I will give it a shot before I go by some third party software.
