I understand the importance of getting your pictures back onto your iPad. There could be a few reasons why your device crashes like that.
Try checking if your iCloud photo library and Photo Stream are enabled first. This will let you know if you have your pictures backed up in iCloud. If this is turned on but still see no pictures on the device, please check your iCloud via the webpage to verify that your pictures are there.
Check for any iOS updates on the device.
Backing up and resetting the iPad to factory settings may prove to be beneficial in your situation. This will erase all of the contents and data from the device so you can set it up as new. You can then check the device performance to see if it crashes. The links below will assist you with the steps I suggested:
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
These procedures should have your iPad up and running as it should with your pictures in no time. Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Have a great day.
