Q: Will the components of a 2008 Mac Pro work in a 2006 Mac Pro?

I have a 2006 Mac Pro with 2 x 2.66GHz dual core processors and 6GB memory.

I want to buy a used 2008 Mac Pro which the seller report as "sometimes works and sometimes doesn't".

I want to know if I can remove the processors, memory and graphics from the 2008 one and put it on my 2006.

My Mac Pro 2006 specs:

  • 2 x Intel Xeon 2.66GHz dual core 64-bit LGA-771 socket CPU
  • 6GB 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC RAM

The used Mac Pro 2008 specs:

  • 2 x Intel Xeon 2.8GHz quad core 64-bit LGA 771 socket CPU
  • 28GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC RAM
  • ASUS AMD Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5

I'm guessing that since the sockets are the same of both processors It can be swapped. (I'm not sure.)

I have read that the 800MHz memory will automatically adjust to 667MHz if placed in a 667MHz board.

Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1), null
