Q: MBP randomly Shutsdown with previous cause -103

Hi,

I have a MBP 2007 with a replacement battery. The MBP shutsdown with no warning to a off state. On restart

syslog -k Sender kernel | grep Previous

reveals

Jul  6 14:13:31 localhost kernel[0] <Notice>: Previous shutdown cause: -103

The MBP is not running on the battery, it's running on a MagSafe connector connected to a Display. The battery has 1 cycle, is fully charged

Charge Information:

  Charge Remaining (mAh): 4222

  Fully Charged: Yes

  Charging: No

  Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4245

The cell voltages just before the shutdown (by logging ioreg -n AppleSmartBattery | grep CellVoltage once per second were)

"CellVoltage" = (4083,4118,4078,0)

The Cell Voltages were stable and the ioreg is currently reporting

Did a buy a dud replacement battery ?

Are there any non dud replacement batteries for a MBP 2007 any more or is the only option to bin the laptop ?

Could the problem also be caused by a faulty MagSafe power feed from the LED monitor ?

(I have already reset the SMC)

Discovered that the MagSafe connector from the LED Display was showing up under a System Information ->System Report -> Hardware -> Power as

      Connected:Yes
      ID:0x0000
      Revision:0x0000
      Family:0x0000
      Serial Number:0x00000000
      Charging:No

But a 85W Power adapter brick showed up as

    Connected:Yes
      ID:0x0100
      Wattage (W):85
      Revision:0x0000
      Family:0x00ba
      Serial Number:0x006ce428
      Charging:

    No

After following the instructions at Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters - Apple Support and cleaning the LED MagSafe plug it now shows up in the System About as (and the LED on the MagSafe adapter works, so probably the earth pin had a problem)

      Connected:Yes
      ID:0x0100
      Wattage (W):85
      Revision:0x0000
      Family:0x00ba
      Serial Number:0x00778b8c
      Charging:No

    (note different serial number)

Since doing this no random shutdowns (5h) where previously several in the same time period.

In which case it means the -103 shutdown cause means that there was a drop in voltage detected by the SMC controller on either the battery or the Mains Power Adapter supply.  Will leave the Laptop on overnight to verify this behaviour.

Use System Information (in Applications > Utilities) to check the battery details. If you see see five-digit numbers like "65535" for the maH capacity values in SI then it is a dud battery. There are a lot of counterfeit batteries out there. The only vendor I would trust for a battery for that model is Other World Computing:

Laptop sayed on overnight with no shutdown verifying it was due to a faulty ground pin on the MagSafe plug.
