Q: Keynote crashes

Keynote 6.6.x crashes during startup and it seems because is trying to open the file that was open the last time I used it.

My questions are:

  • Some recommendations on this site suggest to "trash" the Preferences/com.apple.iwork.keynote..... I've done that, still the crashing continues. How to start Keynote without open this last file - I don't remember what file I had open the last time I used Keynote.
  • Other recommendation calls for downloading a fresh version of Keynote but, the only option shown in the App Store is Open and not download, therefore, it will open the same, installed version that crashes. Removing the file from the Application folder doesn't do it either.

Any quick help will be greatly appreciated.

You should be using Keynote version 6.6.2 as it is the most stable and reliable version so far.

I suggest  the following procedure to try to rectify the problems you are having

To reset Keynote, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work

and you must perform all the steps in the order listed

Appcleaner is free and works well for this procedure, it can be download from here:    Appcleaner

    1. uninstall Keynote
    2. empty the trash
    3. shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
    4. wait 10 seconds, then press the power button
    5. immediately after you hear the start up tone, hold down the Shift key
    6. release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen, start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
    7. after the repair and the Mac is fully booted, restart the Mac normally, (Apple > Restart)
    8. install Keynote from the Mac App Store
