If you couldn't use the password recover link and you had not proof of original purchase from Apple or an authorized reseller, the device would be useless to you.

Jul 6, 2016 2:11 PMby sberman,Perhaps your friend has a second-hand iPhone that was legitimately erased and cleaned up before it was resold, while you have a second-hand iPhone that was previously stolen and therefore not released from Activation Lock.
