Q: iMac Randomly Shutting Down: Shutdown Cause: -128

Less than a month ago, I updated my computer to OS X El Capitan. I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 with 4 GB of RAM. A few days ago, my computer randomly started shutting down, or the screen turned black and I had to unplug the cord from the outlet to turn it on again. When I looked in console to see the issue, it says: kernel: Previous shutdown cause: -128. I'm not very good with the tech-y stuff that has to do with computers, and I honestly have no idea what this means other than what I found on the Internet. I know it means that "User canceled an operation," but I don't really know what I'm doing to cause this... Is it from closing an application or something? I've tried doing SMC resets, as mentioned before. Wondering if this could be caused by updating to El Capitan?  I just wanted to know what's happening because I need this computer for school, and if it shuts down or something without being able to save my work, it'll be really inconvenient.

This almost certainly is a hardware issue. In other topics where the "-128 cause" was discussed faulty RAM is one of the suggestions. Have you added RAM recently? Also a faulty UPS unit can be a cause. Other suggestions can be found in:

iMac suddenly shutdown with previous cause -128

It just randomly shut down again, but this time the previous shutdown cause is 3...

I haven't added any RAM, ever. The only thing I've done to my computer recently is upgraded to El Capitan... It happened again about an hour ago and the shutdown cause was "3" that time, and I have no idea what that means. Should I try reinstalling OS X? Or downgrading back to Yosemite maybe?

That also indicates a hardware issue (power supply perhaps). You don't have an UPS unit?

I don't think it's a software problem. But try running the Hardware Test: Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

I ran the non extensive test first and no issues were found. After, I ran the extensive test and again, no issues were found.. I don't have a UPS unit I don't believe.

Thank you for your help, but if this doesn't work (haven't had them deleted long enough to tell,) or even if it does, am I able to redownload these apps? It's fine if I can't, it's just that I probably use these two applications the most and would be a lot more convenient if I could.
